Bideford, Westward Ho! & Appledore
For everything nautical and picturesque, this area is exceptional. Bideford is situated on the river Torridge. It is famouse for its impressive medieval bridge, with arches of different sizes. Walking along the Quayside, you’ll see a glimpse of the past with the beautifully restored ‘Kathleen & May‘, the last remaining wooden hull three mast top sail schooner.
Just outside Bideford is Westward Ho!, which is named after Charles Kingsley’s book with the same name. It’s a lovely Victorian seaside resort that has two miles of golden sand protected by a unique pebble ridge and promenade. The tourists could indulge in spectacular coastal walks or discover Northam Burrows Country Park. And for keen golflovers, Wesrward Ho! Has the oldest golf courses in the country, which is also listed in the top 100 worldwide courses.
Appledore is the working port and market town of Bideford. It is only a few miles from the beaches of Westward Ho! It is a coastal village with classic narrow streets and pretty cottages, craft shops and tearooms. It’s a perfect place to visit during your trip in North Devon. Central to the village is the quay where you can view the two river, the Taw and the Torridge meeting the Atlantic. The regions nautical history is interestingly documented and presented in the North Devon Maritime Museum in Appledore.
