Contraceptive Drugs
I’ve heard about a lot of discussion about the moral grounds of contraception and abortion lately.
Actually, when considering seriously, you’ll find out that there are a lot of complicated but funny things concerning this topic. The argument on the whether it is kind of sin to have an abortion is still going on. There is even a phrase called “criminal operation” used by people in replacement of abortion.
Another one of them is the argument on taking morning-after pills or the abortion pills.
Many people think that they are the same. However, there are differences between these two drugs.
Sold under the brand name Plan B, the morning-after pill prevents pregnancy but has no effect if a woman already is pregnant. It’s a higher-than-normal dose of a hormone found in regular birth-control pills and prevents ovulation or fertilization of an egg. It also may prevent the egg from implanting into the uterus, the medical definition of pregnancy, but recent research suggests that’s not likely. On the other side, the abortion pill, RU-486 or Mifeprex, can terminate pregnancy up to 49 days after the beginning of the last menstrual cycle. It’s a two-pill process. First is Mifeprex, which blocks production of a hormone, required to sustain pregnancy. Then a second medicine, misoprostol, to cause contractions and finish the abortion.
So people argues that taking the former one to prevent pregnancy is not having an abortion at all. So it should by no means go against people’s religion beliefs such as Christianity, which ban them from having an abortion. What’s more, actually it can actually help lower the rate of abortion greatly.
Well, we must say that the more options the modern science give us, the more controversies concerning the issue there are going to be.
