Fashion Accidents befall us all. Now, with festive dinners and New Year’s parties fast approaching, our favourite clothes are living dangerously. Imagine salmon canapes tumbling down your best dress, cocktails splashing across an expensive white skirt, or worse, smudges of make-up on the beloved’s collar.
Here’s some finest in fashion first aid tips and advice on how to care for the clothes. Cut out and save!
1. Red Wine
Hand wash with club soda. The salt absorbs the stain and prevents it from adhering, while the bubbles lift it out of the fabric.
2. White Wine
Rinse in cold water or boiling milk.
3. Lipstick
Removes as much as possible with a credit card or a butter knife. Daub with a wet wipe and then rinse with hot water to remove the oils.
4. Grass
Gall soap is completely biodegradable and contains chlorophyll, making it particularly good for grass stains. It’s also good for other tough stains.
5. Tomato Sauce
If it’s a small spot: scrape away the worst of it and then rinse with cold water and liquid soap. For larger stains, continue by daubing with white wine vinegar.
6. Coffee and Tea
Daub with white wine vinegar and rinse.
7. Beer
Rinse thoroughly in cold, soapy water. Pure vodka works too.
8. Oil
Rub in cornstarch and leave for at least 20 minutes. Brush off with a dry towel. Repeat if necessary. This works best for silk and wool. If you can take the item home and wash it, pretreat it with citrus oil. Gall soap is another solution.
9. Make-up
Sponge it off with a slice of white bread.
10. Fruit
Comes out right away if you pour boiling water on the stain.
11. Candle Wax
Once dry, try to removes as much as p[ossible, then put a piece of kitchen paper on either side and iron. The paper will absorb the wax.
