Miao Hui—New Year Fairs in Northern China

Temple Fair, which is also known as Miao Hui, is a traditional assembly held in Northern China to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is one of the most cultural events during the time of Spring Festival that cannot be missed, as it features all kinds of Chinese folk art.
The asseemblies got the name of “Temple Fairs” as they are usually held at various ancient temples. These fairs, originated along with the development of Buddhist and Taoist activities, are a kind of mass gatherings that integrate religious worship,entertainment and commerce.
Temple fairs in the city of Beijing have a pretty long history. It boomed especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) as well as the Republic of China (1912-1949). There are more than 10 major temple fairs held annually in Beijing.
